Nica Selvaggio is a Chicago born, Indiana bred, Seattle formed poet/writer/therapist who is still trying to find her place in the story of all things. While never formally trained in writing, poetry comes to her like breath. She writes about the things that often go unspoken. Trauma. Grief. Sexuality. Addiction. Adoption. Race. Gender. Identity. Power. Nica’s deepest hope in sharing her writing is to create safe spaces to explore the darkness that resides within us all, thereby igniting the light found in connectedness. Her creative work is gritty, honest, raw, and unrefined. It is a reflection of her fierce belief in the power of harnessing vulnerability and authenticity on the page as a means of healing trauma and pain.
Nica is currently working on publishing a chapbook of poetry, a sampling of which you can find in the poetry pages of this website. Keep your eyes peeled for a Kickstarter campaign to help fund this project.
Other creative endeavors include working (semi) diligently on her memoir, contributing bi-monthly writings to the For Women Who Roar blog, writing for the Eating Recovery Center and Insight Behavioral Health Centers blog, reading at various events in Seattle, and putting pen to paper as often as her heart allows.
You can follow Nica on Instagram @nicaselvaggio for a new poem posting every Friday.
Very soon you will be able to find her on the Youtube page, Poetic License, where she will be reading her poetry and inviting viewers to share their personal reactions and mental health questions elicited by the creative work. She will then provide a follow up video answering viewer questions through an informed therapeutic clinical lens. This will be a digital space in which the potent medicine of creativity meets the science of clinical mental health.
If you are interested in hearing Nica perform her work live, or you are interested in booking her for a writing or mental health speaking event, check out the events section of the website and fill out the form there.
